Russia supports the former UN chief Kofi Annan as the joint United Nations-Arab League envoy for Syrian crisis

MOSCOW, February 24 (Itar-Tass) — Russia supports the former UN chief Kofi Annan as the joint United Nations-Arab League envoy for Syrian crisis, the head of the State Duma international affairs committee, Alexei Pushkov, told a news conference on Friday.

Annan, 73, served as the U.N.’s secretary-general from 1997 to 2006. His mandate is to bring an end to the violence and promote a peaceful political solution.

“Moscow supports Kofi Annan,” he said. “The world community is the United Nations and not the so-called Friends of Syria who seek intervention. The U.N. tries to coordinate states’ positions.”
