Kofi Annan appointed as UN, LAS special envoy in Syria

Annan occupied the post of the UN general secretary for two terms in succession from 1997 to 2006

THE UNITED NATIONS, February 24 (Itar-Tass) — Kofi Annan was appointed as a special representative of the UN general secretary and the League of Arab States (LAS) for the settlement of the Syrian crisis, UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon and LAS Secretary General Nabil al-Arabi said in a joint statement, which the UN head office made public on Thursday evening. Annan, who was born in Ghana, occupied the post of the UN general secretary for two terms in succession from 1997 to 2006.
