MOSCOW, February 23 (Itar-Tass) —— Russian President Dmitry Medvedev has informed President of the United Arab Emirates Khalifa bin Zayid Al Nuhayyan of Russia’s position on the Syrian settlement, the Kremlin press service reported on Thursday.
The telephone conversation between the two presidents focused on “the need for the soonest end to violence in that country, regardless of where it comes from, for launching a broad dialogue involving all the parties to the Syrian conflict, and for ensuring Syria’s state sovereignty,” the press service said.
It was emphasized that “foreign interference, attempts to assess from outside the legitimacy of the authorities of this or that state run counter to the norms of international law and are fraught with a threat of regional and global destabilization,” the press service noted.
The president of the United Arab Emirates “showed understanding of the approaches proposed by the Russian president.” The two presidents “agreed to maintain contacts and further coordinate their efforts both in the bilateral and international formats in order to promote the Syrian settlement, peace and stability in the Middle East,” according to the press service.
The two heads of state also noted “the high level of the Russian-UAE relations and discussed prospects for their further strengthening.”
The conversation was part of telephone contacts on the situation in Syria. Earlier, the Russian president spoke with King of Saudi Arabia Abdallah, President of Iran Mahmud Ahmadinejad, and Prime Minister of Iraq Nuri al-Maliki.
