SUKHUM, February 23 (Itar-Tass) —— Abkhazia’s parliament believes that the assassination attempt against President, Alexander Ankvab, was a political crime against the achievements the country had made at the cost of tremendous efforts.

The republic’s legislators expressed concern and indignation over the “daring crime and regard it as a “well-planned terrorist act aimed at liquidating the head of state and destabilizing the social and political situation in the republic.”

The law-makers pointed out that several previous attempts on Ankvab’s life, committed over the previous years remained unsolved.

The People’s Assembly urged the law enforcement agencies to take comprehensive measures to thoroughly investigate and solve this crime and bring those responsible to justice.”

The Abkhaz parliament has expressed condolences to the family of the presidential bodyguard, killed in the attack.

“The forces behind this crime must know that threats and intimidation and attempts at destabilizing the situation have made the spirit of our people still stronger and caused them to rally closer together for the sake of Abkhazia’s future,” the statement runs.

The assassination attempt against Ankvab took place on Wednesday morning at about 8:25 Moscow time near the village of Druzhba, on the Gudauta-Sukhum road. One bodyguard was killed and two others injured.
