Terrorist group members in western Kazakhstan receives prison sentences

Investigators found out that the group’s activities were targeted at law enforcement agencies

ASTANA, February 22 (Itar-Tass) — Five members of a terrorist group in western Kazakhstan will face long-term prison sentences, an official of the Aktyubinsk regions’ district court said on Wednesday.

A 20 year old organizer of the group was sentenced to 13 years in prison on charges of terrorism, promotion of terrorism and storage of weapons.

Other members will spend from five to eight years in a strict regime colony for involvement in terrorist activities.

Investigators found out that the group’s activities were targeted at law enforcement agencies. Criminals compiled the lists of policemen and tracked their whereabouts to stage terror acts. They also produced weapons and sold them to terrorists who were convicted earlier.

Last year several trials against terrorist groups took place in the Aktyubinsk region. Ten people reeived prison sentences for complicity in staging a suicide bomber blast near the building of the national security committee’s department last May that wounded three people.
