MOSCOW, February 21 (Itar-Tass) —— Rostelecom has put into service a new telecom line between Kingisepp, Leningrad region, and Stockholm. The line testing ended successfully on February 15, the company said on Tuesday.
The line was built in cooperation with the Swedish company TeliaSonera International Carrier. The cooperation agreement was signed in fall 2011. “The line runs from the Kingisepp and Kotka cable stations of the Baltic cable network to the TeliaSonera optical fiber network in Finland and Sweden,” Rostelecom said. The useful life of the new line is no less than ten years.
“The new telecom line will give an additional access to the international infrastructure and Stockholm,” the company said. “The project is prompted by the swift growth of Internet traffic,” Rostelecom Vice-President – Commercial Director Pavel Zaitsef said.
He said the number of subscribers to Rostelecom broad-band Internet service has topped 8.2 million, including 1.8 million linked with optical technologies. The capacity of the Europe-Asia transit line will soon exceed one terabytes per second.
