MOSCOW, February 20 (Itar-Tass) —— One of the prominent personalities of the former Soviet epoch, a former member of the CPSU political bureau and the last Chairman of the former Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the Russian Federation Vitaly Vorotnikov passed away at the age of 86.

Sergei Obukhov, Secretary of the former Presidium of the CPSU Central Committee, confirmed the report about Vorotnikov’s death. "KPRF leader Gennady Zyuganov expressed his condolences in connection with Vorotnikov's death. He was a unique person," Obukhov said.

"If Vorotnikov had not withdrawn his candidature at the First Congress of people’s deputies of the Russian Federation no one knows what our history would have been like. Vorotnikov enjoyed strong support of the deputies' corps," Obukhov added.
