Car production at Petersburg plants grows threefold in January

A total of 26,800 vehicles were produced by four car manufacturers in the second biggest city of Russia in January

ST. PETERSBURG, February 20 (Itar-Tass) — Car production at St. Petersburg plants increased threefold in January if compared to the same period in 2011, sources from the Auto-Dealer-SPB analytical agency told Tass on Monday.

A total of 26,800 vehicles were produced by four car manufacturers in the second biggest city of Russia in January. According to the agency, the share of St. Petersburg in the amount of car production across Russia in January exceeded 22 percent. According to the General Director of Auto-Dealer-SPB Mikhail Chaplygin, in January each fifth vehicle in Russia was produced in St. Petersburg.

“A growing demand for St. Petersburg-produced vehicles greatly influenced the figures of the first month of this year,” he stressed, adding that five car models were on the list of 25 top sales across the country. Those were Hyundai Solaris, Opel Astra, Chevrolet Cruze, Kia Rio and Nissan X-Trail. Hyundai Solaris and Kia Rio were among the five biggest-selling car models.
