ABU DHABI, February 19 (Itar-Tass) —— Syria follows the way of reforms in accordance with a clear time schedule, Syria’s President Bashar Assad said during a meeting with China's Deputy Foreign Minister Zhai Jun on Sunday.

Assad said that the country leaders undertake measures to stabilise the situation in the country, to restore security and to protect the citizens from terrorists.

“Those acting against Syria, are trying to split it in order to deprive it of the geostrategic importance and to undermine the historic role in the region,” he said.

Following the meeting, China’s representative informed that Beijing strives for “political settlement in Syria by means of a dialogue to involve all the sides.”

“China has been watching closely the situation in Syria and calls all the sides in the conflict for stopping violence as soon as possible and beginning an overwhelming political dialogue,” he said. “China supports the efforts of the League of Arab States aimed at political settlement of the conflict and calls its all sides for cooperation in the framework of that organisation.”

“China takes a responsible and impartial position on Syria’s issue,” he continued. “China’s government supports the dialogue with the Syrian government, Syrian opposition and the LAS and together with the international community plays an active and constructive role in settlement of the Syrian crisis.”

Normalisation of the situation in that Arab country would favour the regional stability, he added.

“China, being a friend of Syria, hopes for successful referendum on the draft of the new constitution and the parliamentary elections, as well as for further reforms aimed at development and growth of wellbeing of the Syrian people,” Zhai Jun said.

China’s foreign ministry reported that during the negotiations “the Syrian side highlighted the fair position of China on the situation in the country, thanked China for the efforts in settlement of the conflict and also assured the Chinese side that it would undertake every effort to normalise the situation in the country.”
