MOSCOW, February 18 (Itar-Tass) — Police detained over 50 people on Saturday by preventing a potential battle in downtown Moscow, the Moscow Main Interior Department’s press service reported.

According to police, upon completion of a picket on Chistye Prudy a group of citizens went to downtown where they should have to meet with representatives of ethnic minorities in order to sort things out.

“Thus, police detained over 50 people in the area of Bolshay Nikitskaya Street and adjacent bystreets. At present, they have been carried to police stations to hold them administratively liable for ignorance of law. So, Moscow police prevented the fight,” the press service reported.

Earlier, an authorised picket was held on Chistye Prudy. The picket was organised by nationalist organisations. Its participants demanded fair trial over Dagestan-born martial arts champion Rasul Mirzayev who killed student Ivan Agafonov with a single punch.

According to the press service, “the picket involved about 150 people, about 50 representatives of mass media and bloggers.” “There was no incident during the picket,” the press service added.
