Tymoshenko needs no special medical care

Ukraine’s former Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko, who serves her term in the Kachanovskaya penal colony (Kharkov), does not need any hospital treatment or surgery

KIEV, February 17 (Itar-Tass) — Ukraine’s former Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko, who serves her term in the Kachanovskaya penal colony (Kharkov), does not need any hospital treatment or surgery, the country’s Prosecutor General Viktor Pshonka said at an all-Ukraine seminar of prosecutors in Dnepropetrovsk on Friday.

“No in-patient treatment, especially surgical intervention is needed. These are the  findings of foreign experts who examined Ti\ymoshenko,” said the prosecutor general.

Two doctors from Germany and three from Canada visited Ukraine in order to examine Yulia Tymoshenko. An international medical commission also included the leading Ukrainian doctors. The medical opinion was not disclosed.

According to yimoshenko’s supporters, during the time spent in custody since August 2011 the former prime minister’s health had deteriorated, she cannot walk independently because of her back problems.

Tymoshenko fell ill on August 18, 2011, two weeks after her arrest. Her lawyers say that she “has been in bed for about four months.” Medics believe that Tymoshenko has discal hernia. She has been complaining about pains in the back. Her lawyers claim that her condition is worsening despite medical treatment.

Tymoshenko was sentenced to seven years in prison for exceeding her power as prime minister by signing gas agreements with Russia in January 2009. She is serving her sentence in the Kachanovskaya colony. On January 26, Tymoshenko’s lawyers filed a cassational appeal against the “gas case” verdict.
