Alexander Zaika, the captain of the sunken ship remains in Japan, pending an official charge, which the Japanese Prosecutor’s office is to bring against him by February 21.
On February 7, Tanya Karpinskaya collided with the Kota Duta container ship sailing under the colors of Singapore. Its captain - Ignacy Marek, a Polish citizen, was also detained.
When the two ships collided the Russian ship had been moving from one mooring berth to another one, and the other ship with the displacement of 8,245 tons was heading into the open sea. The Russian ship had 1,300 tons of scrap metal on board the ship brought to Niigata from Petropavlovsk- Kamchatsky.
Tanya Karpinskaya freight ship was built in 1975. It was owned by the Vladivostok-based Universal expeditor company. In recent years Tanya Karpinskaya was predominantly used for cabotage transportation.
