MOSCOW, February 16 (Itar-Tass) —— A peacekeepers’ operation in Syria is only possible if all the parties to the conflict agree to it, according to Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Gennady Gatilov.
“Any peacekeeping mission in line with the United Nations principles is based on consent of all parties to the conflict,” the Russian diplomat wrote in his Twitter page on Thursday. “This is applicable to Syria as well. Otherwise there will be no success.”
Earlier Sergei Lavrov, Russian Foreign Minister, reiterated Russia’s position on the Syrian settlement. “Any decisions on the international presence must be taken in the event when all conflicting parties give their consent,” he said. “This basic principle cannot be ignored.”
