Damascus opposes international peacekeepers’ presence

Russia thinks that peacekeepers could be deployed to Syria only when the Syrian authorities and opposition agree not to use force

MOSCOW, February 15 (Itar-Tass) —— Damascus is against international peacekeepers’ presence in the country, Syrian ambassador to Russia Riyad Mohammad Haddad said on Wednesday.

“Syria has categorically rejected this option,” he said.

Earlier, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said that peacekeepers could be deployed to Syria only when the Syrian authorities and opposition agree not to use force. To keep peace it is necessary first to establish peace, he noted.
