German physicians complete Tymoshenko's examination

An international commission of medics from Germany and Canada started examining Tymoshenko on February 14

KIEV, February 15 (Itar-Tass) —— German physicians completed the medical examination of the Ukraine’s former Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko at the Kachanovskaya penitentiary in the Kharkov region and left the country. They left their medical assessment report in a sealed envelope, the press service of the Ukrainian Prosecutor General’s Office reported on Wednesday.

According to earlier reports, an international commission of medics from Germany and Canada started examining Tymoshenko on February 14 in the presence of Ukrainian specialists. The examination lasted for five hours. After German physicians were through with their part of the work they wrote a report and left the country. Medics from Canada will resume the examination on Wednesday.

“Tyimoshenko will be notified of the results of the German medical check after the examination is over. Their report is in a sealed envelope, which proves the commission’s independence,” the press service said.

The international medical commission started examining Tymoshenko at the penitentiary at about 19:00 Moscow time on Tuesday. According to Raisa Moiseyenko, the Ukrainian First Deputy Minister of Health and the head of the medical commission, at first Timoshenko refused to be examined by the commission but later gave her written consent. “Now she is being examined by seven doctors – five foreign and two Ukrainian,” Moiseyenko said.

On October 11, 2011, Tymoshenko was sentenced to seven years in prison for exceeding her power as prime minister by signing gas agreements with Russia in January 2009. She is serving her sentence in the Kachanovskaya colony. On January 26, Tymoshenko’s lawyers filed a cassational appeal against the “gas case” verdict.
