Talks with Iran regarding the Iranian nuclear issue should be resumed

China considers it necessary to urgently resume the negotiations of the international “sextet” of mediators

BEIJING, February 13 (Itar-Tass) — China considers it necessary to urgently resume the negotiations of the international “sextet” of mediators (five members of the UN Security Council plus Germany) with Iran and to strengthen Tehran’s cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Ma Zhaoxu said in a statement posted on the ministry’s website on Monday.

Ma Zhaoxu on Sunday arrived in Iran on a two-day visit. On the same day he held talks with Deputy Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council (SNSC) Ali Baqeri. “In current circumstances the Chinese side intends to maintain close contacts with all the parties concerned, to exert every effort for an early resumption of negotiations of the six countries with Iran, as well as encourage the strengthening of cooperation between Iran and the IAEA,” Zhaoxu said in a statement. According to him, all this is necessary to “bring the Iranian nuclear issue to the right path of negotiations.”

The Chinese Foreign Ministry informed that the Iranian side for its part confirmed at these consultations its readiness to strengthen cooperation with the IAEA further and said it is committed to the earliest resumption of negotiations with the “sextet.”
