ST. PETERSBURG, February 11 (Itar-Tass) —— Presidential representative to the North-Western Federal District Nikolai Vinnichenko said the probe into the activities of St. Petersburg’s police would continue.
“The probe, which has resulted in the dismissal of [city police chief] Mikhail Sukhodolsky, is continuing to be finished and will not end today. Its main purpose is to review investigative and detective other activities and no more than that,” Vinnichenko said, addressing the participants in a meeting at the Main Department of Interior Affairs for St. Petersburg and the Leningrad Region on Saturday, February 11.
Deputy Interior Minister Sergei Gerasimov, St. Petersburg Governor Georgy Poltavchenko, Leningrad Region Governor Valery Serdyukov and senior Interior Ministry officers attended the meeting.
“Sukhodolsky’s dismissal is only the first result of the probe,” he added.
The envoy stressed that this decision – to dismiss Sukhodolsky – was made on the basis of the probe which will continue “without interference in your work”.
President Dmitry Medvedev dismissed Sukhodolsky earlier this week and appointed his deputy Sergei Umnov as a temporary substitute.
