Moscow authorities to offer another venue for Putin campaign staff’s rally

MOSCOW, February 10 (Itar-Tass) —— The Moscow city authorities will offer the Putin campaign staff to change the place of the action planned for February 23 and to cut the number of participants from 200,000 to least 100,000, Vice-Mayor Alexander Gorbenko said on Friday.

“We will have time until Monday. We will try to convince the organizers that they should not hold a march down Tverskaya Street. Besides, Manezh Square is simply unable to hold so many people,” he said.

“We will offer other routes and a lesser number of participants. I think we will learn the organizers’ reaction on Monday,” he noted.

Poklonnaya Hill and Luzhniki are possible venues of the rally, he said.

Gorbenko said the day before that the city government was considering the application of the Putin campaign staff for holding an action in Moscow on February 23.

“The city administration has been notified about the planned march and rally by representatives of the campaign staff of presidential candidate Vladimir Putin. Campaign staff head S. Govorukhin submitted the notification together with Russian Federation of Independent Trade Unions Chairman M. Shmakov, leader of the Russian Association of Afghan War Veterans F. Klintsevich and Chairman of the Russian Public Organization of Armed Forces Veterans M. Moiseyev representing the Russian Popular Front,” the Moscow authorities said.

They noted that the action was supposed to draw 200,000 people.

“Action participants will gather on Tverskaya Zastava Square from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. with the column stretching into Triumfalnaya Square. The march will take place from 12:00 p.m. to 13:00 p.m. along Pervaya Tverskaya-Yamskaya Street and Tverskaya Street to Manezh Square. The rally will be held on Manezh Square from 13:00 p.m. to 14:30 p.m.,” they said.
