KIEV, February 10 (Itar-Tass) —— The Ukrainian State Penitentiary Service stated that former Prime Minister of Ukraine Yulia Tymoshenko on February 9 began serving her prison term, to which she was sentenced for the abuse of power when concluding gas contracts with Russia in 2009, in the Kachanovo penitentiary (Kharkov) under the verdict, which the Pechorsky District Court of Kiev handed down to her.
"As of today, Feb. 9, according to an order of an investigator in the criminal case, the custody chosen as a preventive measure against Yulia Tymoshenko doesn't apply to her anymore. Thus, today Tymoshenko has started serving her seven-year sentence, which was pronounced by Pechersky District Court of Kyiv, in the Kachanovo penetentiary," the penitentiary service said.
Timoshenko was transferred from the detention centre of the Kachanovo penitentiary to a general ward. The former prime minister continues to study the case files concerning office abuse at the post as the head of the United Energy Systems of Ukraine corporation.
