MOSCOW, February 10 (Itar-Tass) — Russian President Dmitry Medvedev said that fighting extremism is one of the main tasks of the renewed police. According to him, attempts at “playing the national card” create a risk to the country’s existence.
“Suppression of extremism manifestations is an important task. We live in an exceptionally complex state – federative, multi-faith, the largest in terms of territory,” the president said. “Police officers have a special responsibility for the preservation of peace and accord in our society,” he stressed. “Unfortunately, we have plenty of people who want to incite interethnic hatred to satisfy their political or personal ambitions. Various problems can be used as a pretext, including mistakes in the sphere of ensuring law and order.” “It was so a year ago when inaction of law enforcement agencies triggered mass disorders,” Medvedev recalled.
“We must prevent such situations. Because they create the risk to the country's existence,” he said. “Therefore it is necessary to most decisively clamp down on any attempts at ‘playing the national card.’”
