Duma to make a special statement on Syria

The State Duma will make a special statement on the situation in Syria to urge its people to take a responsible approach towards defending its statehood

MOSCOW, February 9 (Itar-Tass) — The State Duma, lower house of Russia’s parliament, will make a special statement on the situation in Syria to urge its people to take a responsible approach towards defending its statehood, speaker Sergei Naryshkin told journalists on Thursday.

“One more issue, which is submitted to the agenda for tomorrow, is to adopt a statement on Syria. Lawmakers voice concern over the situation in the country,” Naryshkin said.

The speaker recalled that on February 4, Russia and China “voted against the resolution on Syria in the U.N. Security Council because this document did not solve the main problem – to stop the conflict and violence in the country”.

“The State Duma will address the Syrian people asking to improve the dialogue in order to cease violence,” Naryshkin said. In his words, “the State Duma will call on the Syrian people to take a responsible approach towards the fate of the state and protection of statehood.”
