Traffic on Georgian Military Road is suspended because of the avalanche hazard

Traffic was suspended on Krestovy pass on the Georgian Military Road, which is leading to the border with Russia, over the hazard of avalanches

TBILISI, February 8 (Itar-Tass) — Traffic was suspended on Krestovy pass on the Georgian Military Road, which is leading to the border with Russia, over the hazard of avalanches, representatives of the Georgian motor road department told reporters on Wednesday. “The traffic on the Krestovy pass is suspended for all types of vehicles,” they said. Due to the avalanche hazard relevant services cannot begin the cleanup of this section of the Georgian Military Road.

The Georgian Military Road goes through Krestovy pass to the district centre of Kazbegi, further north to the border with Russia andcheckpoint Kazbegi (Georgia) and the border checkpoint Verkhny Lars (Russia), where the North Ossetian section lays along the state border of the two countries.

The traffic was not suspended on other central highways of the country, but on the passes Gombori (Eastern Georgia) and Nakerala (Western Georgia) the cars can drive only with anti-skid chains. The ban was introduced on traffic of vehicles with trailers and semi-trailers in the direction to Kakheti.
