President of Maldives Mohamed Nasheed resigned on Tuesday following weeks of anti-government protests

NEW DELHI, February 7. / ITAR-TASS /. President of Maldives Mohamed Nasheed resigned on Tuesday following weeks of anti-government protests throughout the country. In his televised address he stated - " I don't want to hurt any Maldivian. I feel my staying on in power will only increase the problems, and it will hurt our citizens," Nasheed said, "So the best option available to me is to step down." President Nasheed handed over his powers to Vice President Mohamed Waheed Hassan Manik.
