HELSINKI, February 6 (Itar-Tass) —— During his term of presidency Finnish President Elect Sauli Niinisto will develop relations with Russia “at the absolutely concrete level” and “for the interests of the peoples of both countries.” He has made a statement to Itar-Tass at his first press conference in the capacity of the Finnish president elect on Sunday.

“Russia is our important neighbour,” Niinisto noted. “Russian-Finnish relations are perfect recently,” and the countries should develop them at all levels, including economy and human contacts, he pointed out.

Niinisto will take the post of the Finnish president on March 1.

On Monday, he will meet with incumbent President Tarja Halonen to discuss the political situation in the country.

Niinisto will pay his first foreign visit as the president to Sweden according to the long-standing tradition of Finnish presidents.
