MOSCOW, February 4 (Itar-Tass) — Around 1,000 people participated in the rally “For clean and honest democracy”, organized in support of presidential candidate from the Liberal Democratic Party Vladimir Zhirinovsky, reported the Moscow police department.
The department specified that the event passed without incidents.
Addressing rally participants, Zhirinovsky, running for the Russian presidency, said that Liberal Democrats “are sympathetic with all who protest the elections” and accused authorities that they “provoked people to come to the streets”.
He made a brief digression into the national history, during which “three regimes collapsed”, which happened, according to Zhirinovsky, over the fact that they “forgot about Russians”. The present authorities which the Liberal Democratic leader called “the Petersburg team”, cannot control the situation either.
To confirm his idea, Zhirinvsky recalled cases of attacks by roaming dogs on people, numerous road accidents and fires resulting in human victims, the situation around the Lanta Tur tourist company, as a result of which Russian tourists “were kicked out of foreign hotels as tramps”.
Speaking with a reservation that he does not want “to pin a label on someone", the Liberal Democratic leader blasted organizers of rallies which are also staged on Saturday – on the Poklonnaya Hill and the Bolotnaya Square, in which supporters of presidential candidate Vladimir Putin and the opposition participate. In Zhirinovsky’s opinion, the names of these places are “symbolic” (Eds. Bolotnaya means swamp in Russian).
According to Zhirinovsky’s allegation, only the Russian Liberal Democratic Party offers the country’s citizens “a bright road”, since its aim is “to support the majority”, while others defend the minority.
He expressed confidence that given “honest elections are held” in March, he will overpower Vladimir Putin, will trounce Communist leader Gennady Zyuganov in the runoff and “will drive into the Kremlin late in March”.
Following Zhirinovsky, the rally was addressed by State Duma deputies from Liberal Democrats and leader of the Working Russia Party Viktor Anpilov.
Rally participants were swinging yellow-bluish party flags and chanted “Zhirinovsky – our president”.
