MOSCOW, February 2 (Itar-Tass) — State Duma Foreign Affairs Committee chairman Konstantin Kosachev said Russia disagrees that the legitimacy of Bashar al-Assad's regime should be decided by other peoples.

After the conflict in Libya Russia’s confidence in Western partners “radically reduced”, Kosachev said on Thursday.

Commenting on the situation in Syria, the lawmaker said, “Russia took into account Libya’s experience. “The level of our trust in our Western partners reduced radically,” Kosachev said in an interview with the Echo of Moscow radio station.

Focusing on the U.N. Security Council resolution on Syria, he said, “These pledges are similar to Libya’s. Their purpose was to cease bloodshed. But everything ends with foreign interference and the overthrowing of a concrete regime.”

“The main thing Russia objects to is the Morocco draft resolution, which urges other peoples to decide on the legitimacy of the regime in Syria. We oppose this stance,” he said. “Russia proposed to hold talks on Syria in Moscow. The Syrian regime accepted our proposal. The opposition says the regime is illegitimate and any talks with it are senseless,” Kosachev said, adding, “Such position is being ‘translated’ to Syria by the West and imposed to the opposition.”
