MOSCOW, February 1 (Itar-Tass) —— Moscow insists that the observer mission of the League of Arab States (LAS) to Syria should speak in the U.N. Security Council.

“We have said that the head of the LAS Mission should be heard at the earliest opportunity,” Churkin said during a Moscow-New York videoconference on Wednesday, February 1. “The Security Council will meet in two hours, and Russia intends to raise the question of inviting Sudanese General Ahmed Mustafa al-Dabi to speak in the Council.”

Some members of the U.N. Security Council say that there is no need to invite the general, the diplomat added.

Churkin noted that the date when the LAS mission’s report will be reviewed is under discussion.

“Some say that a meeting on the report will not take place before Monday. But where is the report? Then we raise the question point blank: there will be no meeting or it will not take place before Tuesday if the Security Council gets no document, at least in English,” Churkin said.

The Russian delegation has insisted that the report be given the status of an official U.N. document and translated into all six languages of the U.N. Security Council.
