BANGKOK, January 30 (Itar-Tass) — Russia’s consulate in Thailand provides every possible assistance with hotel accommodation and airport dispatch services to clients of Lanta Tur Voyage, one of the country’s largest tour operators that went bankrupt, a spokesman for the Russian diplomatic mission, Vitaly Anopov, told Itar-Tass on Monday.
In some hotels in Thailand, in particular those in Pattaya, hotel administrations took away passports of the tour operator’s clients demanding payments for hotels. Consulate officials help tourists to coordinate accommodation issues with administrations and search for hotel rooms at lower fees for those who were expelled from their hotels.
According to the Russian consulate, there are 1,500 Russian tourists who travelled to Thailand applying for Lanta Tur Voyage services. Most of them are accommodated in Pattaya and Phuket Island and several dozens spent their vacations in Bangkok, Anopov said.
The deputy head of the Russian tourism agency (Rostourism), Georgy Sarishvili, will arrive in Thailand on Monday to resolve the complicated situation.
“At present, Thailand is a sore spot for our tourists. More than one thousand of Lanta Tur clients are staying in Thailand and most of them faced accommodation problems over unpaid fees,” he said before his departure to Bangkok.
Last Friday Lanta Tur Voyage unexpectedly stopped functioning. According to tour operators, around 1,000 Russians who bought tours from the company cannot go on vacation abroad. For 12 years Lanta Tur had worked on the Russian market and specialized in organizing tours to Thailand, Vietnam and India.
