MOSCOW, January 30 (Itar-Tass) — The question of the Kurile Islands should be settled in Russia at a referendum, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said in an interview with the Japanese television and radio broadcasting corporation NHK on Sunday.

Speaking on the prospects for joint economic activities on the islands Lavrov said, “Step by step, building up trust, working on ‘the tissue’ of practical cooperation, we will bring closer the creation of the atmosphere, which contributes to a calm, without emotions search for a mutually acceptable solution, which, as we should not forget it, should be approved by the societies of the two countries.” “In our case, at any variant, this is the question, which should be settled at an referendum,” Lavrov added.
