MOSCOW, January 26 (Itar-Tass) —— A number of patriotic and veteran organizations of the All-Russia Popular Front plan to stage a mass rally in support of Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin, who was nominated as candidate for Russian president by the ruling United Russia party, in Moscow on February 4.

Nadezhda Koreneyev of the Patriots of Russia party told Itar-Tass on Thursday a request for authorization had been filed with Moscow mayor’s office. “We plan to hold a march from the Dorogomilovskaya Zastava Square to the Poklonnaya Hill, where a 30,000 rally will be held,” she said.

Along with Patriots of Russia, the rally’s organizing committee includes delegates from the Russian Union of Pensioners, the Moscow Trade Union Organization, the Union of Afghan Veterans, and a number of other organizations.

United Russia leaders are aware of this initiative. One of its leaders, Sergei Neverov, said on Thursday he did not rule out that the party would also take part. “If I receive and invitation from the organizing committee, I will also come,” he said and added that as far as he knew similar rallies are planned in a number of other Russian cities.

Meanwhile, the opposition also plans a rally in downtown Moscow on February 4. The action called For Fair Elections has been squared with the city authorities and will be held on the Bolotnaya Square. Organizers expect that it might draw up to 50,000 people.
