PERM, January 23 (Itar-Tass) —— Former Russian tax minister Alexander Pochinok was elected on Sunday as a member of the Mecha village council in the Perm Territory's Kishert district, a district election commission source told Itar-Tass.
The known politician won the additional election to the council, gaining an absolute majority -- 94.5 percent of the votes.
The village council consists of seven deputies.
Pochinok was a self-nominee, and he was registered as a candidate in December. He personally submitted the documents and himself carried on his publicity campaign, visiting the village three times, Kishert district election commission chairwoman Yelena Gileva told Itar-Tass.
About his occupation, Pochinok wrote he was "provost, director of the Institute of Social Medicine and Rehabilitation Technologies of Russian State Social University".
According to the suppositions of the Perm press, Pochinok needs the election to the village council to get a seat in the Federation Council as a representative from the region. The Perm Territory's two seats in the Russian parliament's upper house are vacant at present.
Pochinok worked in the Federation Council since 2007 as a representative of the Krasnodar Territory, but was recalled by the territory's Governor Alexander Tkachev in October 2011, earlier than his term expired.
