Russian Strategic Nuclear Forces to get 8 Borey submarines

Starting from 2013 the Russian Strategic Nuclear Forces will be replenished with a next missile-carrying submarine of this project annually within six years

MOSCOW, January 20 (Itar-Tass) —— The Russian Strategic Nuclear Forces will put in service two new strategic missile-carrying cruise submarines of Borey class 955 Yuri Dolgoruky and Alexander Nevsky this year. Starting from 2013 the Russian Strategic Nuclear Forces will be replenished with a next missile-carrying submarine of this project annually within six years, a source in the Russian military and industrial sector told Itar-Tass on Friday.

“Eight Borey submarines will be built at the Sevmash shipyard ahead of time, with two years ahead of the deadline, envisaged under the state armament program through 2020. The Sevmash shipyard will focus on the construction of new missile-carrying submarines, the main sources will be allocated there, probably even thanks to a partially weaker program to build new Yasen multifunctional nuclear-powered submarines. The last submarine from eight Borey submarines is scheduled to be put in the strategic nuclear forces in 2018,” the source said.
