MOSCOW, January 19 (Itar-Tass) — Head of the State Duma committee on security and fighting corruption /United Russia faction/ Irina Yarovaya drew an amendment on life imprisonment for supplies of large batches of drugs. Yarovaya announced her initiative in comments on the check into the sale of psychedelic substances in Novosibirsk.
This year, the Novosibirsk authorities launched a probe into an Internet trailer which showed that drugs were sold openly.
"I believe the problem of drugs has three aspects: first, the supply of narcotics to Russia, second, the spreading of drugs and drug dependence, and third, it is the problem of those who abuse drugs and require medical, social and psychological assistance," the lawmaker said.
In her opinion, it is necessary to toughen the punishment for suppliers of particularly large batches of narcotics to life imprisonment. "I have brought forward the relevant amendment. Also, we'll consolidate our actions with the Federal Service for Control of Drugs and Psychotropic Substance Circulation /FSKN/ in working out new initiatives to make sure that the situations - such as in Novosibirsk - never occur again, and offer sufficiently legal mechanisms and reasons for stopping such crimes," the lawmaker said.
"Already now the law should intercept any "ingenuity" of drug producers.
"Together with the FSKN, we'll hold a hearing of the problem and suggest concrete solutions," she promised.
Last summer, the United Russian faction stated its intention to introduce legislation on life imprisonment for drug barons, and the FSKN supported the initiative. The lower house will review the government initiative to perfect legislation in the field of combating drug trafficking, to which the provision on tougher punishment might be easily added.
