ASTANA, January 15 (Itar-Tass) —— The turnout in Kazakhstan’s early parliamentary election hit a record of 66.9% (6,233,000) as of 4:00 p.m. local time (2:00 p.m. Moscow time). The indicator stood at 64.56% by the same time in the previous parliamentary election in August 2007.
The final turnout may be even higher: the polling stations will close down at 8:00 p.m. local time (6:00 p.m. Moscow time) across the republic and 9:00 p.m. local time (7:00 p.m. Moscow time) in four Kazakh regions located in a different time zone.
The turnout is higher than 80% in three out of 16 regions, and it exceeds 70% in six regions. The least active are voters in Almaty (21.9%). Nearly a third of voters (30.5%) have cast their ballots in the capital city, Astana.
The Kazakh Foreign Ministry said that the turnout at 56 polling stations outside of Kazakhstan had exceeded 50%.
