Prokhorov collects over 2 mln signatures

MOSCOW, January 13 (Itar-Tass) —— A business tycoon Mikhail Prokhorov, who intends to run for president, has already collected the required number of signatures in his support. He stated about this to visitors of his public liaison office in downtown Moscow on Friday.

“I have already collected more than two million signatures,” Prokhorov said thanking his supporters.

Prokhorov noted that about 170 people are stitching up the signup lists. “This process is long, we are stitching them up round the clock, but I am planning to submit the signatures in the Central Elections Commission at the beginning of next week,” he said.

Prokhorov stated about his intentions to run for president on December 12. Three days later on December 15 he had a meeting of the initiative group in support of his nomination and already on December 18 the Central Elections Commission registered his election agents and permitted to open a special election account.

For the official launch of his election campaign Prokhorov should submit no less than two million signatures in his support in the Central Elections Commission, the deadline for the submission of the signup lists expires at 18:00 Moscow time on January 18.

The Central Elections Commission officially registered presidential candidates from four parliamentary parties: Vladimir Putin (United Russia), Gennady Zyuganov (the CPRF), Vladimir Zhirinovsky (the LDPR) and Sergei Mironov (A Just Russia).

The Russian presidential elections will be held on March 4, 2012.
