MOSCOW, January 7 (Itar-Tass) — Moscow has expressed concern over demands for former Egyptian leader Hosni Mubarak’s death sentence and called for taking into account humanitarian considerations, the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement on Saturday.
“Last week Egypt resumed a trial over Egypt’s ex-president Hosni Mubarak, his two sons and some former senior law enforcement officials. According to the incoming information, a prosecutor in the trial demanded for Mubarak death by hanging. The trial in Cairo is still underway,” the ministry said.
Along with this “Moscow expresses concern” over such reports.
“We unalterably proceed from the assumption that the talk is about domestic affairs in friendly Egypt. We hope that final decisions will be taken on the basis of the highest international legal standards,” the ministry said.
“At the same time we consider it possible in Hosni Mubarak’s case to take into account humanitarian considerations, as the talk is about a person of advanced age, who turned 83 and who is reportedly severely ill,” the ministry said. “Moreover, as a political leader last February he took a well-known decision to step down, which in many respects allowed to avoid more casualties among innocent people.”
