Medvedev orders testing of all Olympic facilities

SOCHI, January 5 (Itar-Tass) —— Russia’s President Dmitry Medvedev ordered obligatory testing of all facilities which are being constructed for the 2014 Winter Olympic Games in Sochi.

At the meeting devoted to test competitions of 2012 winter-spring season, the president stressed that many sports facilities are becoming arenas for sports events.

“In compliance with the existing international practice all new facilities should undergo testing before opening of the Games,” he said on Thursday. “I am drawing your attention that this must be done.”

According to the report, the president has, 83 facilities are finished, and certain stages are finalised at 26 facilities.

“However, unfortunately, the work’s rates differ mostly because of problems with financing and some other problems, including design and, in some cases, simply bad management,” he said.

Medvedev asked participants in the meeting to present their ideas about what they are going to do in order to observe the planned schedule.

He said that before the meeting he visited two facilities, which are being constructed, and stressed that it would be for the first time in Russia’s history that the Roza Khutor ski resort will host a world cup in alpine skiing.

“The scale of the work is huge, as we are constructing are reconstructing over 800 facilities,” he said adding that construction continues not only at sports and tourism facilities, but also at facilities of healthcare, transport, energy, etc.

Medvedev added that after the Olympic Games are over, the infrastructure will improve the quality of life of those who live in Sochi and around it.
