MOSCOW, January 5 (Itar-Tass) — The newest corvette Boikiy, which has been launched and currently undergoes dockside trials at the Northern Shipyard in St Petersburg, will join the Baltic Fleet (BF) in 2012, Captain 2nd Rank Vladimir Matveyev, spokesman of the BF, told Itar-Tass on Thursday.
"The Boikiy will be a third serially manufactured corvette of Design 20380. The first-of-the-class, corvette Steregushchiy, was turned over to the BF in 2007. The second corvette of this design, the Soobrazitelny, was handed over to the BF on October 14, 2011," Matveyev pointed out.
Upon completing production and state official testing, the corvette Boikiy, like its predecessors, will join the BF to start accomplishing missions in line with its designated purpose, Matveyev said.
Corvettes of Design 20380 have a displacement of 2,000 tonnes. They are more than 100 metres long, have a maximum speed of up to 27 knots and their cruising endurance is 4,000 miles. The ships of this class are basically new by their tactico-technical characteristics and operational properties. Multifunctionality, stealthiness, power of armament, and a high degree of the automation and integration of control systems are among their main features.
