Criminal case opened over lethal road accident in Krasnodar territory

Detective Alexei Tolmachyov lost control of his vehicle on the Krasnodar-Temryuk road and collided with a parked car with four people inside

MOSCOW, January 3 (Itar-Tass) —— A criminal case has been opened in the Krasnodar territory over a road accident that killed three people, Russian Investigation Committee spokesman Vladimir Markin told Itar-Tass on Tuesday.

He said Investigation Committee head Alexander Bastrykin had ordered a thorough investigation of the accident.

Detective Alexei Tolmachyov lost control of his vehicle on the Krasnodar-Temryuk road at about 4:00 a.m. on January 3 and collided with a parked car with four people inside.

“Two men and a girl in the parked car died instantly. Another passenger was taken to the hospital with a brain injury,” Markin said.

He said that Tolmachyov’s car caught fire after the accident. The detective’s brother was not hurt. Tolmachyov came to the police to report the accident immediately.

The Krasnodar territorial department of the Russian Investigation Committee opened a criminal case of the breach of traffic rules causing two or more deaths by negligence (part 5, article 264 of the Russian Criminal Code).

“The Russian Investigation Committee chairman demanded a thorough investigation of the accident. The culprit of the road accident, which killed three people, will be punished in strict compliance with the law, regardless of his merits or rank,” Markin said.

That is the principled position of the Russian Investigation Committee, he said. Besides, disciplinary punishment will apply to heads of the Krasnodar city and territorial investigation departments that failed to ensure the appropriate conduct of their officers in the holiday season.
