Past year is determinative for Ukraine – Viktor Yanukovich

National polls show that most Ukrainians – 76 percent – see the New Year in at hope, considering it a family holiday

KIEV, January 1 (Itar-Tass) —— The past year was determinative one for Ukraine, President Viktor Yanukovich said in his New Year address to the nation.

“Ukraine lived positively the year 2011, and the passing year, without exaggeration, was determinative for this country,” he said. “We built bridges and roads, schools and hospitals, stadiums and airports. We have collected record crops, we were opening Ukraine for the world.”

“Ukrainians have proved that this country is strong by its nation’s unanimity. And further on we shall be retaining and improving this unanimity,” Yanukovich said.

He continued saying that he has big hopes for the current year, and expressed confidence that it will bring success and prosperity to Ukraine.

“We shall continue modernisation of this country, we shall continue building modern, economically developed democratic state,” he said.”Next year, we shall host the European Football Championship. We shall welcome guests in a proper manner and will demonstrate our sincere natural Ukrainian hospitality. I am adamant that the spirit of victory will unite our nation.”

Yanukovich said that in 2011 Ukraine reached a new level of relations with the European Union.

National polls show that most Ukrainians – 76 percent – see the New Year in at hope, considering it a family holiday. However, thousands citizens of Kiev and guests of the country’s capital gather in the centre of the city. A New Year show programme in downtown Kiev has a motto “We Welcome UEFA EURO 2012 in Ukraine!” The stage complex is made in the style of a football field with “golden goals.”
