MOSCOW, December 30 (Itar-Tass) —— The Yekaterinburg strategic missile-carrying submarine, which caught fire on the light hull on Thursday, can be overhauled and put in operation again with the proper funding within 2012, a source in the Chief Staff of the Russian Navy told Itar-Tass on Friday.

“If necessary allocations are made the Yekaterinburg nuclear submarine can be overhauled and put into service again within 2012. The submarine equipment and structure were not damaged in the fire,” the source said. He noted that “before putting the Yekaterinburg nuclear submarine in the dock for the planned repairs the reactor was halted, all weapons from nuclear missiles to pistol cartridges were removed from the submarine.”
