South Stream may run through northern Italy

We will announce the route after an investment decision is finalized - Medvedev

MOSCOW, December 28 (Itar-Tass) — Russia’s gas giant Gazprom did not rule out that the South Stream gas pipeline may run through northern Italy, the company’s first deputy CEO, Alexander Medvedev, told journalists on Wednesday.

“I do not rule this out,” he said. “We’ve made a comprehensive feasibility study. The chosen route has purely economic roots. We will announce the route after an investment decision is finalized.”

Medvedev noted that the feasibility study is one thing and practical conditions are quite another – “these are concrete costs, concrete routes, concrete expenses and concrete pipes.”

“To a certain degree we keep different options, we have flexibility,” he said.
