North Koreans bid farewell to Kim Jong Il

PYONGYANG, December 28 (Itar-Tass) — North Korea is holding a state funeral for its former leader Kim Jong Il, who died at the age of 69 on December 17.

The coffin with the diseased leader, who had ruled North Korea for 17 years, was carried through the streets of Pyongyang.

Millions of North Koreans filled the streets to pay their last respects to Kim Jong Il. The funeral salutes will be fired all over the country and all citizens will bow their heads in a three minute silence.

Kim Jong Il’s body will be embalmed and placed in a glass sarcophagus in the Kumsusan Memorial Palace in Pyongyang, where his father Kim Il Sung’s embalmed body lies.

Russian specialists from the Biomedical Technologies Centre were invited to embalm his body.

Following the North Korean authorities’ decision foreign delegations do not take part in the state funeral.
