Emergencies Ministry expects heavy floods in Siberia in 2012

Shoigu did not rule out electric power blackouts this winter as a result of heavy snowfall and icy rain

MOSCOW, December 27 (Itar-Tass) — Russia’s Emergencies Ministry expects heavy floods in Siberia and the Volga region and does not rule out earthquakes in the Far East in 2012.

“Speaking about natural calamities, we expect heavy floods in Siberia and the Volga region,” Emergencies Minister Sergei Shoigu told Itar-Tass on Tuesday.

“We forecast seismic activity in the Far East – Kamchatka, Sakhalin and the Kurile islands,” he said.

Special attention will be paid to avalanche prevention in mountains, where the danger of avalanches was reported earlier this year than before.

Moreover, Shoigu did not rule out electric power blackouts this winter as a result of heavy snowfall and icy rain.
