MOSCOW, December 27 (Itar-Tass) — Russia’s Emergencies Ministry marks its 21st birthday on Tuesday.
On December 27, 1990, an absolutely new service emerged in Russia – the Russian Rescue Corps was established. Later it was renamed into the state committee for emergency situations and then became one of Russia’s most effective ministries.
“It is undoubtedly a pleasant fact to know that we managed to decrease the number of fatalities in different emergency situations, including those in fires,” Emergencies Minister Sergei Shoigu said in an interview with Itar-Tass.
This year over 100,000 people were rescued in fires.
“Over the past nine years fire deaths registered a declining trend, their number shrank by half. This year we managed to reduce the number of fires more than by 7 percent and fire fatalities – by 6.4 percent. This means almost 1,000 saved lives,” he said.
“We also managed to reach more effective rates in road accidents. The Emergencies Ministry’s road traffic police saved 101,400 people on roads,” Shoigu said.
“All this is the result of daily, very concrete, let’s say, goal-oriented steps towards modernization of the Emergencies Ministry’s system,” he said.
At present, the Emergencies Ministry’s team includes rescuers, firefighters, psychologists, cynologists, mine rescuers, the state inspection of small size fleet, the aircraft fleet and civil defence.
