SUKHUM, December 26 (Itar-Tass) — The Abkhazian parliament has ratified an agreement to deploy the united Russian base on the territory of the republic.
According to presidential representative to the parliament Dmitry Shamba, the Article 5 of the Treaty of Friendship, Cooperation and Mutual Assistance between Russia and Abkhazia is the legal base of the agreement. Article 5 says, “In order to ensure security, peace and stability in the Transcaucasian region each party will give another party the right to build military bases on its territory.”
On September 22, 2011 the Russian State Duma ratified the agreement. The Federation Council ratified it on September 28, 2011. Russian President Dmitry Medvedev signed the law on the ratification of the agreement on October 5, 2011.
In compliance with the agreement military units of the base jointly with the Armed Forces of the Republic of Abkhazia protect sovereignty and security of both Russia and Abkhazia.
Shamba said, “The military base was set up in response to the Abkhazian leadership’s request to deploy Russian military units in order to provide military assistance to defending sovereignty and security of Abkhazia.”
