TIRASPOL, December 26 (Itar-Tass) —— Yevgeny Shevchuk- the former parliamentary speaker and leader of "Vozrozhdenie" (resurrection) movement, has won a sweeping victory in the presidential elections in the Dniester region, the Central Election Commission of self-proclaimed Dniester region declared Monday, citing the preliminary results.
In the runoff elections on Sunday Shevchuk won 73. 8 percent of votes. His rival, head of the local parliament Anatoly Kaminsky, collected 18.9 percent of votes only.
Supporters of the incumbent Dniester President, Igor Smirnov, who dropped out of the presidential race after the first round, had called on the electorate to vote against all so as to invalidate the results of the election. However, only 4. 4 percent of voters followed Igor Smirnov’s advice.
A source from the Kaminsky election headquarters officially confirmed that their candidate was lagging far behind Shevchuk in the runoff polls. A representative of the Kaminsky election headquarters told Itar-Tass that he was very much surprised at the loss of so many votes, but said they would not challenge the results.
