MOSCOW, December 20 (Itar-Tass) —— Russian President Dmitry Medvedev congratulated security services on their professional holiday on Tuesday.

“I am confident that the current generation duly develops the professional traditions of its predecessors and impeccably accomplishes its missions,” he said at a meeting, which marked the Day of Security Services.

Security services “particularly value professionalism and loyalty,” he said. The president thanked security services for their work and successes achieved this year.

“The modern world is developing very rapidly. Unfortunately, these changes are frequently unfavorable and we have to give them an appropriate response,” he said. “The first decade of the 21st century and the beginning new decade have witnessed crises and traditional threats. Yet we have a rather good experience of the provision of security and can deter both traditional and new hazards,” he noted.

“We must be constantly analyzing global processes without losing touch with the Russian realities, expose the real causes of the events in the country and in particular regions and to suggest ways of suppressing the threats,” he said.

“It is necessary to use the most advanced managerial and engineering techniques in the solution of communications and IT tasks. Security services must be modern – this is the only way to make them efficient,” he said.

The president demanded that security services “must give terrorists no chance to destabilize the country.”

He described the suppression of terrorism and extremism as a key goal.

“Your achievements of the latest years must be developed. The achievements are very impressive. No matter what they may say, a lot has been done and health and sometimes lives of our comrades have been sacrificed,” he said.

Medvedev ordered the active combating of corruption, organized crime and other felonies.

The president also ordered to support the strengthening positions of Russian companies abroad with counter-intelligence measures.

“Certainly, counter-intelligence measures are necessary as the global rivalry is tightening,” he said at a Tuesday meeting dedicated to the Day of Security Services.

“Russia enjoys high authority and role in the world, it is of serious interest to other states,” Medvedev said. “Therefore, business relations and strengthening positions of our companies abroad should have appropriate counter-intelligence support.”

“It is also necessary to protect national security and defense data. There is some work to do in that area, bearing in mind the rapidly changing cyber-space,” the president said.

He said that Russian security services celebrated their 20th anniversary this year. He conveyed heartfelt greetings to security services veterans.
