KIEV, December 19 (Itar-Tass) —— Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovich admitted difficulties in the gas talks with Russia.
He described the current status of the talks as “grave condition” and admitted that it was hard to predict their outcome.
Ukrainian Minister of Energy and Coal Yuri Boiko “goes to Moscow for gas talks if not every day then certainly every other day”, Yanukovich said at a press conference after a Ukraine-EU summit on Monday, December 19.
He said, with indignation, that despite the “Kharkov discount of 100 U.S. dollars” per 1,000 cubic metres of gas, Ukraine continues to pay a rather high price for Russian gas.
Earlier, presidential chief of staff Sergei Levochkin did not rule that Ukrainian Prime Minister Nikolai Azarov and Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin might discuss this issue.
“Everything depends on the government. Nikolai Azarov will have a new round of talks with Vladimir Putin in the next several days,” he said.
Levochkin said that Yanukovich plans to attend a CIS summit in Moscow on December 20 but has no plans to discuss the gas issue.
“If this issue is raised during his meeting with President Dmitry Medvedev, it will not be the main topic. The gas talks are being conducted by the government,” he said.
