15 people killed in massive riots in western Kazakhstan

Some 70 people were already detained, eight of them were arrested, on suspicions of participation in massive riots in Zhanaozen

ASTANA, December 19 (Itar-Tass) —— The death toll of massive riots in western Kazakhstan reached 15 people. The Kazakh Prosecutor General’s Office reported that 14 people were killed, 11 of which were identified in the city of Zhanaozen in the Mangystau Region. Another man, who got a gunshot wound at the railway station Shetpe overnight to Sunday, died at the hospital.

The protester, who appealed to support the rioters in the city of Zhanaozen, blocked the passenger and cargo train traffic on the local railway line, the Prosecutor General’s Office said in a statement over massive riots breaking out at the railway station Shetpe in the Mangystau Region. Seven passenger trains and three cargo trains were delayed as a result of the blocked traffic.

“Since the actions of the hooligans really threatened the life and health of civilians, the police had to use guns,” a source at the Prosecutor General’s Office said. According to preliminary reports, “12 were hospitalized with gunshot wounds, one of them died at the hospital.”
